Student Congress & Public Speaking

Participants attending the Student Congress & Public Speaking workshop will receive top of the line training in Student Congress competition, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Public Forum Debate. Very few workshops in Student Congress offer unlimited access to a library of the caliber of UNT's.

Student Congress has long been a state event across the country and a qualifying event at the National Forensic League National Tournament, but has only recently been added to qualifying events at the Texas Forensic Association State Tournament. Mean Green congressional debaters will research and debate the very legislation that will be debated in 2008‑2009!

Students will become more than proficient in skills such as: parliamentary procedure, presiding over a chamber, writing & researching legislation, congress strategy, and speaking skills. Of course, numerous practice sessions will be integrated into this intensive session.

A public forum debate topic will also be researched with basics of the event discussed and viewed prior to practice rounds. Strategies, speaking skills, and argumentation principles will be discussed.

Extemporaneous speaking will also be a component of this year's camp. Organizing, researching, preparing to speak, and presentation skills will be discussed prior to students presenting 12-15 practice speeches, with at least 6 speeches on videotape. Students can take these tapes back to school with them in the fall for further coaching purposes.

Lab leaders are highly skilled, competitively successful college students who know what it takes to participate in Texas and national forensics.
