Our Middle School programs are specially designed for rising 7th and 8th graders. Rising 9th graders, even those without experience, should consider enrolling in one of our High School programs.
We are pleased to announce the second year of our Middle School Debate division. Debate and public speaking in Middle School, already popular in other parts of the country, are quickly gaining traction locally as more schools in DFW begin to offer competitive Middle School programs. Our workshop will offer a program that relies on the strength of our already stellar High School staff who will adapt their curricula for use in the Middle School division. Students will receive teaching from a variety of MGW faculty who will rotate into the Middle School division for uniquely tailored instruction. The workshop aims to develop skills that will introduce students to speech and debate, assist students in having success in their Middle School programs, prepare students for High School debate, and improve valuable speaking skills even for students who never plan to participate in competitive forensics.
Introduction to Middle School Debate
An intensive one week experience will expose students to a wide variety of competitive events with an emphasis on Extemporaneous Speaking, Public Forum Debate, and Original Oratory. With input from various nationally-ranked and state champion extempers, we have crafted a program designed to teach both style and substance to public speakers of all levels. Specific lecture time and practice is devoted to format, gestures, movement, phrasing, topic choice, concentration drills, source selection, and content. Our goal is for each student to prepare an Oratory and/or participate in a live Extemp Draw as well as prepare for and compete in a Public Forum debate tournament. Each camper will contribute to a set of “virtual” extemp files to bring home at the end of the camp. Student speeches will also be recorded and made available as an important tool of self-reflection and self-examination for all campers.
Advanced Middle School Debate
This program will concentrate specifically on Extemporaneous Speaking, Public Forum Debate, and/or Lincoln Douglas Debate. Rising ninth graders and middle school students who wish to do Policy or LD Debate in High School should strongly consider or regular Policy and LD workshop options. This program is more suitable for rising eighth graders or younger students who have already participated in a year of debate. Participants in the advanced workshop will have the option to compete in up to 3 events at a tournament ending the week. Student speeches will also be recorded and made available as an important tool of self-reflection and self-examination for all campers.
